Why do Cars.com and DealerRater Require That Reviews Contain a Minimum of 25 Words?

Cars.com and DealerRater require that reviews contain a minimum of 25 words, and we adhere to this policy for a number of reasons:

  • The story is just as important as the star rating.
  • When reading positive reviews, consumers look for standout experiences.
  • When reading negative reviews, consumers look for context that distinguishes between a truly bad experience and a finicky or grumpy customer.
  • A minimum wordcount helps us reduce fraud and reputation inflation.

We understand the need to make the review submission as frictionless as possible so that consumers can provide feedback with ease, and we balance that need with the desire to provide the best possible content for our user community.
